HP also is expected to announce a string of technology companies that support its standards and could turn out blades or components that hook into HP systems.

Those include chip makers Advanced Micro Devices Inc. , Intel and Transmeta Corp., storage networking provider Brocade Communications Systems Inc., and software developers Microsoft, Oracle Corp. and RealNetworks Inc. among others.

Seems like change is brewing?

Milo, it sounds like it. I am unclear what exactly will be its function.....data storage? And what will the blades replace...mainframes?

It sounds cool but what has really impressed me about AMD of late is that according to Sanders, it can lose GTW and IBM as customers and still maintain market share. That blew me out of the water........it shows how far AMD has come in the last 4 years. This ain't your father's chip company anymore. ;~))

Milo, Re: Blades/Symmetric Computer Processing vs SMP and SMT.

Yes, this is just the continuation of the trend in computing -- symplification of the hardware for the sake of performance/cost while emphasizing the software/control systems.

It's really goofy to add CPUs to server PCs in an attempt to drive performence when each added CPU brings in less than 66% of the previous one in performance terms. Much more productive(though for now more difficult) to just add PCs to the server.

That's what blade is about. Just part of the trend.
