I was trying to pin down the exact interaction with the options expiration that happen at the same time.

There's different ways they could add the shares. They could buy them all at the closing price (presumably by pre-arrangement with some MMs); they could buy them all on the Monday after; they could buy the major portion before the Friday and then just "top-up" the amounts based on the Friday close, etc.

I looked in the QQQ prospectus, but didn't see anything useful. This is all it said:

Generally, the list of annual additions and deletions is publicly announced via a press release in the early part of December and replacements are made effective after the close of trading on the third Friday in December.
