There is an absolutely outstanding article at the Inquirer.

It's an article / analysis, and not the usual news item.

Very little about AMD, but it sounds like the High Performance Technical Computing segment is going to be up for grabs right about the time Hammer debuts. Buyers in this category are independent and willing to go with less well known solutions if they offer the best performance.

If AMD can gain a solid foothold in this segment, they can begin building a critical mass to help make a run at the enterprise.

If AMD can get anything approaching volume in some high end machines, and maintain a consistent architecture and instruction set from performance desktops to "big iron", Itanium/IA-64 would appear less and less a relevant solution, and could easily be marginalized.

Dan3 Re..French firm Soitec, which told the world early in November that it had received multi-million orders from AMD for its 200- and 300-mm* special SOI wafers, has started delivering them.
A release yesterday said it had started to ship its Unibond wafers in large volume and had also started sampling the 12-inch wafers too.<<<<<<<<<<<

Do you know; if AMD just started receiving SOI wafers, approx. how long before testing and manufacturing are done, and we can expect the SOI based horses to hit the streets. 6 mo.?

"Is there a possibility that Hammer is being pulled in at the same time McKinley is being pushed out?"

Not real likely. If anything gets pulled in, it will be Barton, not the Hammers. Why? Risk. Barton is basically a Tbred on SOI, not a whole lot of changes aside from potentially a faster FSB. Hammers have a lot more changes. In addition, Barton has a much larger potential market. Barton is slated for 2H02, starting wafers in early Q102 would mean an introduction in mid-Q302 instead of late Q402 as a 2H02 date would normally indicate.

Of course, AMD might do a "limited production" of Hammers like Intel did with Itanium. With their latest moves in PR, they very well may do something like that...

I wonder if shareholders could get some "limited production" units?...
