Why not? IBM currently maintains a number of different architectures. Compaq maintains Alpha. HP maintains PA-RISC. Fujitsu still maintains SPARC. SGI still maintains MIPS. In fact, there are many CPU architectures out there, and they are all going to consolidate around a single Itanium platform. What a novel approach, isn't it.
