On September 8, I was talking to an HP exec who told me that the merger with Compag would mean 40,000 jobs would be cut. For the first time n its history, he said, HP would be letting people go. Their mo had been cut back on pay, cut back on hours while they waited out the republican driven recessions ofthe past. That was nine months into Bush' presidency.
