I'll ignore your "How convenient!" comment and address your question.

As far as I know, martyrdom isn't encouraged anywhere in the Quran. Fighting a justified war to defend Islam is encouraged. If one dies in the process of fighting such a war, then they will be rewarded with paradise. However, to draw the conclusion that one should go out and actively try to become a martyr is a leap, IMO.

BTW, since Allah is all knowing, Allah knows whether someone died a martyr simply for the glory of it. Therefore, that Hadith was making the point that because that man became a martyr for the glory of it he was committing a sin. There was no implication that this applied to all martyrs, just this one example where the man's glory was the ultimate goal.
