The price of the Coleman generator was displayed for a while on their website this am. Here are the links copied from SH.Portable FC backup generator:

Here is some SH comment on this

A bit of arithmetic.
Airgen + 3 H2 canisters = $7495; Airgen + 9 H2 canisters = $ 9995.
Therefore cost of 6 Canisters is 9995 - 7495 = $2500.
Therefore cost of 3 Canisters is $1250.
Are you ready for this. 3 Canisters last 6 hours at 50% load acccording to the specs. So 6 hours of 500 watts power will cost you in fuel alone $1,250 and that's in US dollars. This cost does not include of course, amortizing the unit itself, which continuing the above arithmetic, will cost
$7495 - $1250 = $6,245.

I'm glad you visited the site because the Coleman links are now not working. The news release etc were dated DEC.XX . Seems some of us got a premature view.

I agree with you the price is to high .
And the H2 cannisters are way too high.( I wonder if they might be refillable after market for much less, as they are metal hydride.)

Anyways it is a first for INDOOR use FC backup unit, and with soon to come competition (BLD has shipped the Nexa to several others besides Coleman), and volumes, the prices should come down.

It's not for us , but I think like many new products to market ,some
gotta have it and will pay the premium.

I'm hoping so, it would good news for the industry. JMHO

Fuel Cell Technology Now Available to
Consumers for the First Time
AURORA, Ill., December XX, 2001 — Coleman Powermate, a leading power
equipment manufacturer, today introduced the AirGenTM - the world's first indoor
fuel cell generator.

The AirGen harnesses the electricity generated during the creation of water. It
inhales oxygen, interacts with hydrogen and exhales electricity.

While it sounds like science fiction, the science behind fuel cells - called reverse
electrolysis - was invented in 1839.

Fuel cells have played pivotal roles in military operations and space exploration, and
they are now available to consumers for the first time in history.

"The AirGen marks the dawn of the Hydrogen Age," said Steve Krawczyk, president
of Coleman Powermate. "Consumers can now own and operate fuel cell technology
in their homes or offices."

The AirGen is ideal for protecting sensitive electronics and appliances from power
outages and fluctuations. According to Ken Frank, senior design engineer, the unit
automatically senses when utility power fails and acts as an uninterruptible power
supply, keeping mission critical equipment online.

Unlike battery backups, which last mere minutes, Ballard's NexaTM Power Module
inside the AirGen generates up to 1,000 watts of computer-safe electricity as long as
hydrogen gas is supplied.

"It comes equipped with three hydrogen canisters, which can power a typical
workstation for 6-8 hours. When the hydrogen runs low, you simply exchange the
fuel canisters. The process is as simple and safe as changing batteries," said Frank.

The AirGen emits just pure water vapor, allowing it to be used safely indoors. Since
it doesn't have any movable parts, it is extremely quiet and compact enough to fit
under most desks.

Finally, the AirGen acts as a surge protector and power conditioner, buffering
expensive electronics from dangerous power spikes, regulating voltage and providing
perfect sign wave output.

"Fuel cells will play an increasingly important role in back-up and primary power
generation," said Krawczyk. "The AirGen is a glimpse of the future as we see it. It is
clear proof that fuel cell technology is commercially viable and environmentally
sound."

The AirGen fuel cell generator and replacement canisters can be ordered directly
from Coleman Powermate by calling 1-800-445-1805 or visiting
www.colemanpowermate.com.

The unit and three fuel canisters retail for $7,495. The power equipment manufacture
is also offering the AirGen plus nine canisters, providing 24 hours of power, for
$9,995.

Coleman Powermate, a subsidiary of the Sunbeam Corporation, is a leading
manufacturer of electric and fuel cell generators, air compressors, and pressure
washers. The company is headquartered in Aurora, Ill., and has manufacturing
facilities in Nebraska and Minnesota.
