Kopin Corp (KOPN) 18.42 +0.22: Kopin's main products are HBT transistor wafers used to produce high performance chips for wireless products and its CyberDisplay products are used for viewing images in camcorders and digital cameras....The stock is hitting another 52-wk high today and continues its impressive run over the last few months. The stock has been strong lately due to its recently announced deal with Yokogawa Electric to supply HBT wafers for OC-768 applications. This is an important deal because it represents the first OC-768 customer for Kopin, and perhaps a rebirth of demand for this higher margin market. Also, it bodes well on the credibility scale on the quality of Kopin's manufacturing and process technology. A few days ago, Nokia slightly lowered its estimate for the total handset market but growth is expected. The additional handsets combined with a transition towards GPRS and 3G should have a meaningful effect on Kopin's top line. 3G probably will not hit the US until 2004, but handsets are beginning to roll out in Japan now and Europe next year. The key attribute of the 3G phones is the LCD window, Kopin's key technology....Also, Kopin recently announced a deal with the U.S. Army to develop a full-color version of its CyberDisplay 1280. While the military market for these higher resolution displays isn't huge, it's an important inroad. The opportunities in the medical and industrial markets remain strong....The CyberDisplay business is also gaining momentum thanks to strong sales of camcorders. Flat panel display is the place to be for chip stocks these days as GNSS and PXLW trade strongly. Kopin is another name that should benefit from this trend. -- Robert J. Reid, Briefing.com
