Arafat Attempts Crackdown on Terror
Hamas Founder Under House Arrest

Reuters

GAZA (Dec. 5) - Palestinian security forces placed the founder of the Islamic movement Hamas under house arrest Wednesday following pressure on President Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority to rein in militants.

But a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the move against Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, spiritual leader of the group responsible for weekend suicide bombings, was not enough.

''Palestinian police have informed Sheikh Ahmed Yassin that he has been put under house arrest and that he is barred from outside contacts,'' a Palestinian security official told Reuters.

Yassin was the most prominent leader to suffer sanctions from the Palestinian Authority since a round-up of more than 100 militants began late Saturday after Hamas carried out several suicide bombings inside Israel.

But Israeli officials said the move against its spiritual leader, rather than Hamas's military wing, was not enough.

''That's not stopping the suicide bombers. They've got to stop the ones who are doing the crimes,'' said Sharon's spokesman Raanan Gissin after news of the move against Yassin.

The Hamas founder's family said security guards had been stationed outside the ailing, 65-year-old Yassin's home in Gaza City, the main hub of the Gaza Strip. Security forces in jeeps were patrolling the nearby roads.

Hamas, which opposes Israel's existence, took responsibility for suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Haifa over the weekend that killed 25 people and jeopardized international efforts to end more than 14 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Israel responded by blaming the Palestinian Authority and launching multiple airstrikes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Yassin's house arrest could ratchet up internal pressure against Arafat as public opinion largely opposes the arrests of Palestinians fighting against Israeli occupation.

Hamas officials, who have been in hiding since the sweep began late Saturday, could not be reached for comment.

Yassin's son, Abdel-Hamid Yassin, told Reuters that members of the Palestinian police, intelligence and preventive security forces came to his family's home late Wednesday.

''They informed my father that he is under house arrest,'' he said. ''Our relatives can come and go but no one else.''

Dan, have you heard Bobby Kennedy talk? He was on CNBC last nite with Larry Kudlow and Jim Cramer. They got into oil and the ANWR....the guy blew them right out of the water. Kennedy's presentation was straight forward, no BS and he stayed right with the facts. It amazed me that he didn't get ruffled by Kudlow. One of the more impressive Kennedys.

Sadly, I don't think he's going to run for office. Currently, he's an attorney for Riverkeep...in NY.

Sounds interesting. If it makes nuclear energy cheaper and safer it may mean a comeback for nuclear reactors in the US.

Dan3 Re...Any Nuclear energy fans out there? 40 new reactors
(but very small ones) may be headed our way:<<<<<<<<<

I have been a proponent of this very design all of this yr. I was afraid with Sept 11th., maybe the risk would be too high. I really believe this project could be the direction nuclear power, and energy itself will take until fusion can be worked out. Certainly, if airplanes are a worry, the reactor, because of its small size, (the containment vessel is 10X30 ft,) could easily be buried.
