I've never had any formal chess competition either. I haven't even played at all in a long time. I used to play may dad. He taught me. On my third game I beat him because he underestimated me, and wasn't careful about his defense. I didn't beat him again for years. Last few times I played him it's been pretty even. Most of the other games where against my littler brothers or sisters who where mostly children at the time so they where not much of a challenge. In high school we had a "sports day", that included other events besides sports such as chess, and a spelling bee. As a freshman I won both games that I played. The first game I went against a sophmore and I couldn't understand what he was doing. I was thinking that he might have been giving up pieces to try and lure me in to some vulnerable position. Then I realize he just didn't really know how to play well. I thought "oh I get it he's just an idiot", and played aggressively finishing him off quickly. My second game against a senior was tough but I won. My record in chess is very good but it is mostly because I have had weak competition. I imagine that any veteran of formal competition would beat me at least 9 times out of 10.
