I do not assume the general corruption of corporate America
I don't assume the general population is evil, but I like to know that the police and sheriff are out there just in case. The reason is actually well known but denied by those who want a second helping of the American dream before anyone notices their hand in the cookie jar.

Even with the best of intentions it just makes sense for people to maximize their utilization of common resources. The economy is a common resource, as is the air and water. Without some organization and regulation the tragedy is just a matter of time. A whole national economy doing an enron.

This most recent change in the economy brought on by 911 has also educated the looney greens. The way to reduce the pollution is to wreck the economy. All the rabble that go or show up at trade meetings and such have a vested interest in creating chaos to wreck the economy. Their current morality from the destruction of personal property to the destruction of life is not very big leap. I wonder if the lessons of 911 will inspire eco terrorists to more obscene deeds.
