Service Sector Unexpectedly Rebounds

The U.S. service sector appears to be rebounding after suffering through its worst month on record.

The National Association of Purchasing Management said its index of nonmanufacturing activity climbed to 51.3 in November after falling sharply a month earlier to 40.6. Any reading over 50 indicates the service sector is expanding while any number below that represents a retrenchment. October's reading, reflecting the stalled economy following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was the lowest since the index began in July 1997. The data are based on surveys of 370 purchasing and supply managers in 62 industries.

For the first time in more than a year, there are incipient signs of a recovery in manufacturing, the sector of the economy where recession hit first and hit hardest. On Monday, the November National Purchasing Managers Index, which is based on a survey of purchasing executives who buy raw materials for manufacturing at more than 350 companies, bounced to 44.5 from 39.8. The report, most notably a strong 10.5% rise in the index for new orders to 48.8, suggests that the manufacturing sector may have bottomed out.
