Very telling, those last 4 years where the SOX and AMAT went up for the first week or so and then returned back to it's earlier Dec price before reversing back up.

4:17PM Intel (INTC) 34.16 -0.45: As widely expected, co using mid-qtr update to raise guidance; increases Q4 revenue outlook to a range of $6.7-6.9 bln, as compared to the previous range of $6.2-$6.8 bln and current consensus of $6.626 bln. Says demand for microprocessors has been better than expected, trending in line with normal seasonal patterns; gross margin percentage is expected to be within the previous expectation and above the midpoint of the range. All other expectations are unchanged

4:06PM Advanced Micro (AMD) 16.25 +0.01: Company updates guidance for Q4; expects 10% revenue increase from Q3 which means revenues are expected to approximate $841.5 mln versus the current consensus estimate of $778.9 mln; company expects to return to profitability in Q2.

3:58PM Sanmina (SANM) 24.45 +0.40 (+1.7%): Making late move as index funds buy stock to reflect increased weighting following completion of SCI acquisition; estimated that funds will need to purchase roughly 8 mln shares of SANM stock.

12:29AM National Semi (NSM) 33.00 +0.38 (+1.2%): -- Update -- Stock resumes trading. Bidding up off its worst levels of the session. NSM +0.38 at 33.00.

12:13AM National Semi (NSM) 31.64 -0.98 (-3.0%): -- Update -- Reports Q2 net loss of $0.26 per share, $0.05 better than the consensus estimate; Q2 revenues came in at $366.5 mln versus the consensus estimate of $358.3 mln; for Q3 the company expects revenues in the range of $350 to $370 million versus the current consensus estimate of $363.6 million; gross margins and operating expenses are expected to be in line with the second quarter.

11:48AM Sector Watch:Semiconductor : -- Technical -- Slightly extension of today's pullback in recent trade with LSI -3.6%, XLNX -3%, NVLS -3%, ALTR -2.6%, LSCC -2.4% and NSM -2.2% pacing the way. Next support for the SOX index is at 570 with a stronger floor at 560 (200 day simple ma/38% retrace of this week's sprint). Key to neutralizing the very short term weaker bias is a rebound back through 580/582.

Great charts Gottfried. It's amazing what you can do with them. There also appears to be a good chance of a January effect on AMAT. I am seeing it happening at least early in January on all the charts. If AMAT sells off at the end of 2001 it might be good to be a buyer. I think getting in on the last trading session may work quite well even if you turn around and sell the next day.
