Cingular Wireless is tackling a particularly vexing problem for wireless users -- staying in touch while moving in and out of regions covered by distinct, often incompatible networks -- with a nationwide roaming service. The second-largest U.S. wireless carrier claimed an industry first in announcing the launch of inter-carrier roaming for GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) high-speed data services. Delivered through the company's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network, the service gives Cingular customers access to their voice and data services where GPRS is available and includes SMS, among other applications. With the roaming agreements, GPRS customers can access external networks to use Cingular's Wireless Internet Express service. Two-Phase Introduction GPRS customers in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Spokane and Seattle, Washington, will be the first to roam across other Cingular networks, as well as the first to roam on other carriers' networks that provide GPRS, which the company said makes the service unique in the United States. Phase two of the rollout, expected later this month, will deliver roaming service to Cingular's customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, Cingular said. "This is the first step in enabling Cingular customers to use Internet Express on a nationwide basis," said Bill Clift, chief technology officer at Cingular. "They will be the first in the United States to take advantage of mobile high-speed data services." Going With GSM Cingular, a joint venture of BellSouth and SBC Communications, earlier this week announced three deals worth a combined US$3.5 billion to provide the infrastructure for a nationwide GSM network. The initial step in Cingular's migration to 3G (third-generation) wireless service includes deployment of EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM Evolution) technology with GPRS (general packet radio service), beginning early next year. << - Eric -
