Larry,
Just go into the Control Panel
Click Users and Passwords
Uncheck Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.

Right now I'm on my W2K box but I'm 99% sure it's the same
with XP. If no one else chimes in, if you want I can check
for you later to make absolutely sure.

You don't have to use a password with Home Edition XP. There are user accounts and if you'd rather use a password or have multiple users and can password protect each user account.

I don't think using a password is optional on XP professional. I'm not positive, but I couldn't find a way to avoid using one.

I feel a bit more secure this way. It's not just people who have physical access to your computer that you need to worry about. The password layer can deter remote hackers from entering your system. I sure couldn't get in when I first hooked up my network till I got the password issue worked out.
