John,

And in the Intel CC, Bryant said that Intel was not meeting demand, always a good thing for AMD ASP's.

Intel is selling some 20% fewer chips than a year ago, yet there is a shortage. How could it be? Could it be because AMD forced the demand for Intel chips to those that Intel can't deliver in sufficient quantity?

John, Re: Bryant said that Intel was not meeting demand, always a good thing for AMD ASP's.

Strange that Intel can't meet demand while having revenues that are about 30% lower than last year's. Must be the same effect that allows them to grow market segment share every single quarter.

I doubt that it's the marketing scheme that is raising AMD ASP's, I think it's demand.

Without the new marketing scheme AMD wouldn't have anything to raise ASPs. Instead of backlashing big time it was and is a great success. And the best thing is that I haven't seen a single customer complaint about it. IMO there's no doubt that it is very successful. And since AMD is doing better in relative terms in Q4 than Intel it can't be just better overall demand.

Why are people buying from screwdriver shops instead of OEM's?

If you run a small company who do you trust more: A big, anonymous OEM or a small screwdriver shop which owner you know personally and who can help you quickly with problems? The same goes for normal customers. At least for those who are somewhat more informed and know what they want (I always point my friends to these shops instead of buying a OEM PC). Of course this doesn't explain why we see more demand in that area right now but I can understand why people prefer these shops to OEMs. And I don't think online shopping will change that much -- www.compaq.com is just a click away from www.smallville-computers.com.

"Why are people buying from screwdriver shops instead of OEM's?"

Here is a theory. SD shops have increased their service, while OEMs have decreased it. It looks as if everybody have hit the same minimal costs and service is the differentiator.
