Bill and Comb,

Good points on the SD shops. I asked the same question at a local shop, one of the things the guys said was that they offered service on software issues, something you can NEVER get from OEM's. And software issues probably outnumber hardware issues by 5 to 1.

What are the implications? Could the PC marketplace evolve to the point where it isn't a mass market product? I guess that's what happens when component manufacturers own more brand equity than finished goods manufacturers. When people care more about owning an Intel (or AMD) computer than a Compaq of HP computer.
