Paul, it works like this. Let's say your kid is straight A caliber. Then one day he came home and told you he was gonna flunk this quarter. You were mad as hell, gave him a couple spankings and grounded him. Then the report card came home, guess what, he didn't get Fs, he got Ds. Wow, that's exciting, better than previous guidance, so you rewarded him with an increase in allowance.

Of course in real life, the kid wouldn't be rewarded (unless the parents are lunatics). Only in the stock market. But that too wouldn't last.
