The books are worth reading. I was skeptical when they first came out, thought it was just a gimmicky sort of thing.

I was wrong. She's a talented writer with a gift for storytelling. They are every bit as good as, if not better than, the Narnia series, which I also love. Tolkein is more of an intellectual and has more scope for his characters, so I rank him a bit above her, but she's still well worth reading and enjoying. I got the first one out of the library because I hate to spend my money buying into fad hype, which is what I thought it was at the time (my main interest in the book then was debunking it.) Ended up buying all four, and will buy number five as soon as it comes out.

Definitely find time for reading them. Even if only to understand what your grandson and his friends are talking about!
