The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Dec. 7, edition that Bissett & Associates Investment Management fund manager Christopher Fernyc is bullish on Northside Group. The Globe's Shirley Won writes in the Best Bets column that Mr. Fernyc says some of the best deals at the moment are in micro-cap stocks. He says, "Micro caps trade at about nine times trailing earnings, compared with 18 for the Toronto Stock Exchange 300-stock index." There is greater risk with smaller firms but "if you pick the right small company that is well financed and growing, they should really outperform when markets are willing to give them money and support," says Mr. Fernyc says. He recently bought stock in Northside Group. The Calgary-based maker of garbage trucks and street sweepers, which closed Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange at a 52-week high of $8, traded at a 52-week low of $2.40 in January. Its previous 52-week trading high was $7.95 on Wednesday. Mr. Fernyc says Northside signed a deal in March with Houston-based Waste Management to be its sole supplier of garbage trucks through 2003 and that should create more opportunities. Northside trades at nine times projected 2002 earnings.
