AMD, Intel stock go opposite ways after updates

NEW YORK, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. <AMD.N> stock jumped a day after the chipmaker bumped up its quarterly revenue expectations, but shares of Intel Corp. <INTC.O> were off slightly after the company's widely expected positive comments at its mid-quarter business update.

Shares of AMD jumped $2.08, or 13 percent, to $18.33 on the New York Stock Exchange, while on the Nasdaq, Intel stock dropped 47 cents, or a little more than 1 percent, to $33.68.

Intel on Thursday boosted its sales forecast for the fourth quarter, saying it now sees sales at the high end of its previously forecast range of $6.2 billion to $6.8 billion, and may exceed that.

The move had been widely predicted by semiconductor analysts.

AMD said it now expects sales to rise 10 percent, or a bit more from the third-quarter's $765.9 million. Last month, the company forecast sales to be flat or up slightly.

Some analysts said AMD is benefiting from some production shortages with Intel's Pentium 4 processor.

"We continue to believe that AMD could be a good short-term trade based on Intel's production shortages," said Lehman Brothers analyst Dan Niles.
