Unlikely. His case is not unique. And this so called 'War' is undeclared (lawyers will have field day with that). Even in declared wars the interpretations have treated POW's rather less severely than you would believe...even ones with US citizenship's.

Too Bad guys. The law will prevail and justice will be handed out. Its very unlikely the Kangaroo court of this thread will come anywhere near the ultimate reality. He may do 20 years. max. More like 5 -10 and out in 3.
With a really good lawyer it might even be less. And that is assuming they can find a strong charge.

I found that interview pretty strange. The guy is either really fkn nuts, or has a set of brass balls. He didn't seem to be afraid, he just didn't react. But after a few days bombings, fires, no water and living on rotten horse meat anyone would be bit strange. Later interview came after he'd been fed, gotten some medical care, and rest. He was more coherent then.

I don't much care what happens to him, but I find his story very interesting. How many 17 year old Americans end up in a completely foreign world fighting for 'liberation'? This is right out of the old Che mythos. It will be interesting to find out how this all came about.
