Thank you. I've read Heidegger and Kierkegaard but confess I haven't read any Barth. Perhaps I should, but I sort of left existentialism in my 20s. <g>

There's actually a very practical reason for avoiding too dogmatic a view about the divine. Unless one wishes to maintain that in this universe of 100 billion galaxies each of which contains 100 billion stars that intelligent life exists only here on this one lonely planet, sooner or later humanity is going to have to come to grips with extra-terrestrial philosophies and theologies. If the existence of alien civilizations who know nothing of Jesus, or the Buddha, or Mohammed or any other recognizable religious figure would cause a crisis in one's own faith then it may be worth considering a grander vision of creation than the exclusively earth-centric views of most historical traditions.
