The Playstation and Playstation 2 systems are completely different designs. The Playstation 2 was built from the ground up, but there is one exception. That one exception is that the Playstation 2 I/O processor, which is the same as the original Playstation CPU. Sony designed the system so that the I/O processor could run old Playstation games when they are inserted into the system. They must have figured that backwards compatibility would be a selling feature - and they were right. The main Playstation 2 CPU and graphics system, however, are completely different than that of the original Playstation.
