I think its pretty clear what some of the things were that set him down this kind of a path - consider:

1. He has a marine Dad - fight for what you believe in.
2. Rebellion of youth - started this when he was 16.
3. Idealism of youth - see above.
4. Divorced parents - set adrift, needed meaning in his life.
5. Inspired by Islam - Muslim faith is pretty compelling without the fundamentalism. However, I don't know what triggered Muslim vs Christianity, etc other than all the noise coming out of the region.

Yea, right. The ONLY thing of ANY distinction about him is that he was an American, and he gave that up. He has no other distinguishing features or characteristics in his own right that would merit any special interest in him otherwise.
