John in this piece the authors final paragraph struck a chord;

dvdw,

You lost me a little in this piece. I read the reports of voter fraud in St. Louis, as I recall, in that election. They looked, on the surface of things, like the usual back and forth after elections. Given the sometimes backward way we conduct elections in this country, there was most likely some truth in those charges and charges that I recall Democrats in Missouri made as well. Someday, hopefully, we'll have a better system, one that protects against voter fraud and "counts all the votes."

As for how Ashcroft handled himself afterward, I had no opinion. I assumed he decided he would lose the challenge anyway or to challenge would expose some skullduggery on his side. (I don't mean to imply by that sentence that dems don't do the same. Just read Robert Caro's wonderful two volume (one more coming) biography of Lyndon Johnson to see a master at work.)
