Yes if I was all in cash I would have made about 4% (and still lost in USD). I'm down about 6% in USD terms.

I guess my point is that 1% up isn't bad for a long-leveraged-options-clown during a supposed financial collapse....

My biggest loss ever was HIH insurance which collapsed in the biggest bankruptcy in Australian history this year (think a down-under Enron). That didn't help!

Actually most of that loss happened in the previous year, there were three worse losses this year:

PBL Calls (Publishing an Boadcasting - long) stock tanked right away....
Krispy Kreme (short at $US32.5, still short)
QQQ Call Warrants - Bought in the Jan01 market bottom, made a paper profit and foolishly didn't sell..... (this was worst)

Would be up 15% or so perhaps without those 4 disasters.

4 biggest winners:

News Corporation (now my principal trading instrument selling calls and puts and long stock)
Qantas Calls (long)
FS Geared Share Fund (a leveraged Aussie shares mutual fund)
Pacific Dunlop (this is a turn around stock that worked out so far)

Had a total of 29 different companies and funds invested in or traded over the year. Above biggest losses and gains are in absolute terms so depend on how much I invested for how long but that's what makes up the overall rate of return.

I won't be surprised to make another 3-4% or so by the end of the month and match the cash rate for the year. Lot more work, but more fun and a very good learning experience....

Plan for 2002 - Looking for the continuation of the current rally for a month or two or so perhaps into the New Year. Using a big array of technical indicators to look for the top. Then I plan to take a big short position to at least hedge my portfolio (after dumping the worst trash) or maybe go net short for probably much of the year as we crash down again.. of course this plan will be updated continuously. Also plan to continuously sell options in a big way....
