wbmw, given intel's prior record i'd say that the current socket 478 has a 1 year life span at best before the P4 needs another socket. I personally liked Intel a lot when they had the slot 1 which was around for a while. A LOT of people went from lowly P2's to P3's on slot 1. Their socket incompatibilities has tremendously hurt their enthusiast/upgrader sales. Anyway, this is my last post on this subject since all this does not/will not affect their bottom line in a significant way.

wbmw,

Might socket-423 only be the result of growing pains between getting used to a new micro-architecture?

It was a mistake, plain and simple. 3 vestions of Socket 370 was a similar lack of foresight.
