Steve that is true, Ariel Sharon turned decisively the tide in the 1973 war by eliminating most of Egypt armored power north of the Bitter Lake and encircling it in the Sinai Peninsula the Egyptian 3rd Mechanized Army with assistance from the Israeli Armored Divisions under Bren.

Those were one of the biggest armored battles until Desert Storm

If not for Kissinger who at the time stopped the Israeli army short of destruction of the Egyptian 3rd Mechanized Army the ME would be a better place today.

At the time Kissinger was afraid that the Soviets will interfere to save the Egyptian 3rd Mechanized Army and force the US to act.

At the end the Israelis paid the price --- prior the war and after the war ----- and by that enable the US to gain influence in the ME.

When people ask why the US should support Israel.......... the 1973 War is one of many examples were Israeli soldier fought and died to fulfill US interests.

Egypt is worrying about their pocketbook... tourism as at an absolute all time low there. Imagine what heating up of the conflict might do.

Egypt has been capable of tracking down terrorists who strike on their territory (Luxor, hurting tourism), or who attempt to assassinate Mubarak (in Addis Ababa). I think if they wanted to, they could go a long way to eliminating some of the Egyptian background support the various Palestinian terror groups depend on. I don't really think the government there is directly behind this stuff, but they clearly look the other way.

If you want to see the pyramids now all by yourself, now is probably a time to do it.
