Let me make the point this way. It's true there is much mayhem associated with God, and I am not sure what to make of it. I attribute it largely to the culture, which provides evidence for us today in the middle east. I will not offer an understanding of it that makes any claim to being of much use. But neither story is about a cozy god. I think the humor is funny at our expense. Some might wish for a cozy god, or one they can "just go have a look at." We'd prefer a god, if there must be one, that we have control over. It is not a cozy response, especially in that culture, to be offered a peek at one's ass instead. It might be similar in today's terms to "kiss my ass." There is nothing overly friendly about the concession on god's part in the story. The people also thought if they ever saw god they would die, which is not cozy. The point is more likely the opposite. I haven't read much of it in so long, but didn't the people understand making the agreement with god to include the consequence of death for some violations? Especially when worshipping other gods and such.
