Russert on Defensive Over Softball Hillary Interview NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert came under fire Monday morning for failing to ask New York Sen. Hillary Clinton tough questions during her debut on his show "Meet the Press" the day before. Nationally syndicated radio man Don Imus, who did not see Sunday's "Meet the Press" broadcast, grilled Russert about Clinton's responses to a number of questions he assumed would be on the NBC newsman's list. But time after time, a noticeably uncomfortable Russert had to admit he dropped the ball. Imus first wondered how Clinton explained her questionable behavior during President Bush's address to a joint session of Congress immediately after the 9/11 attacks. IMUS: She was rolling her eyes and laughing - clearly acting in a derisive manner when the president was speaking. That would have been a great piece of tape to rack up. She probably would have got up and left. RUSSERT: Well, no - I don't think you can - you know, during the Lazio-Clinton debate up in Buffalo during the campaign I showed the tape from the "Today Show" where she talked about the right wing conspiracy. I have no problem showing tape. But I - I thought.... IMUS: I'm surprised she even talks to you after what you did to her there. Next Imus wondered what excuse Mrs. Clinton had offered for attending only one high profile funeral for New York City's fire department chaplain, while ignoring funeral services for hundreds of her lesser known constituents. IMUS: What was the reason that she gave for not attending any of these firemen's or policemen's funerals here in New York? I know Chuck Schumer has. But then she hasn't attended any of them. RUSSERT: Well, she actually - I know she went to Father Mychael Judge's at the Franciscan friary up there on 34th Street. But I - you know - I - I - I - I very much talked about the war, talked about the tribunals, Walker. Ah - that debate here, I didn't get into that. After Russert left the phone the Imus crew debated why the normally hard-as-nails newsman went flaccid when faced with the former first lady. IMUS: Couldn't Russert - I mean, it would have been in poor taste, wouldn't it, to rack up that tape of her (at the Bush speech)?.... BERNARD MCGUIRK: No. It wouldn't have been in poor taste. It would have been the thing to do. But I'm sure there were a lot of other issues. CHARLES MCCORD: He stayed mainly with the issues of the day rather than.... MCGUIRK: You have a former first lady and New York Senator. I mean, what was the source of her discontent? Certainly the voters would like to know.... Maybe he just didn't have the time to do it yesterday. IMUS: He had plenty of time. MCGUIRK: Well maybe he just - ah, you know - maybe his onions just aren't as big as.... I'm sure it's just that there were many other issues pressing. IMUS: That deal (Russert) pulled with that debate with Lazio, he came through big time there. Maybe he just couldn't come up to the big time yesterday. I wish I'd have seen this. MCGUIRK: Maybe he didn't have somebody to remind him. Or his producers let him down. Maybe she had some conditions under which she would appear. IMUS: (laughing) Oh, I'm sure that's what it was, yeah. Other topics ignored by Russert included: The ongoing Pardongate probe in which the entire Clinton family is under investigation. Her brother Tony's admission last week that he used illegal drugs as recently as August. Her husband's recent address to Georgetown University where he seemed to blame America for the 9/11 attacks. The conflicts between her own account of her daughter's whereabouts on 9/11 and that given by Chelsea herself in a recent essay for Talk Magazine. And Sen. Clinton's failure to apologize to - or even inquire about the condition of - a Westchester County police officer who was injured by Clinton's van as her driver rushed her through an airport security checkpoint in October.newsmax.com tom watson tosiwmee
