Dan: TI is falling behind as a foundry. SUN needs to partner with Motorola, IBM, AMD, or Intel.

AMD has zero experience as a foundry.
Intel is a major competitor.
Motorola doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation with their PowerPC fits.

That leaves IBM, who is also a major competitor, but who would certainly be willing to fab for Sun (IBM's fab unit is completely separate from its CPU unit). However, IBM's fab process (reportedly) isn't quite as advanced as the one they use for the Power4s.

UMC or TSMC would seem a better overall choice. TI would likely be able to offer Sun more process design help, although I am not aware of the exact nature of their relationship.

Dan, Is SUN failing in silicon or in architecture? If they lack the ability to design a new CPU that will allow them to compete with IBM, AMD or Intel products then it is moot who makes their parts.

It appears to be a major intellectual effort to make the next generation. SUN has it's installed base and is able to keep many of them quiet with lesser parts, but after a while the performance lag will become so large that their clients will leave, one by one.

If SUN cannot make the next generation parts and will then seek someone to make them a new parts will it be a totally new part, made with SUN money for SUN OS, Solaris, or will they give up and port their stuff to an INtel or AMD part?

As far as I see, Intel is the big weevil, and thus Sun will pick the lesser of two weevils and go with AMD.

I do not think it realistic for AMD to design a solaris part unless they get Mucho Dinero(The famous Mexican CPU designer) from SUN for the job since they will need much new staff etc and they cannot take their staff from their jobs in progress.

The more I look at it I see SUN entering the AMD camp with a ported product for the hammer?

Of course, I may be waaay off, so anyone feel free to kick me in the britches.
