I compared this situation to a "debt forgiven". If a debt were forgiven, the immediate result on the balance sheet would be a reduction of liabilities and an increase in book value; in other words "profit" of the amount forgiven. But from that time forward free cash flow would be increased by the amount that was annually required for debt repayment.

As you say, only the future will tell us !
