I believe the SAS have two problems. One is "telling stories", the other "Ruperts". That is officers who want a spell in the SAS as it would look good on their records. Not all officers recommended "through the vine" are up to scratch seemingly. Hence we might see an SAS within an SAS as it were. One for show, one not for show.

PB,
US SF had similar problems years ago.

the solution to telling war stories was to convince everyone they were the "quiet professionals". the brass also closed the demonstration areas and eliminated public displays of teams, weapons and capability demonstrations (which the old timers hated to do anyways). the solution to BS stories is to demand and enforce the highest standards of integrity at team level.

the solution to guys coming in for one tour just to touch an important base for a successful career pattern was to establish the Special Forces Officer Branch in 1987. this placed SF on equal footing with infantry, artillery, armor, etc., career branches.
No officers below the grade of captain are accepted in SF and they must give up their current branch and commit to a Special Forces career if they complete training and are accepted.

about the only way out after that is, resigning from the army, serious injury precluding more SF duty, being tossed for a variety of reasons, or quitting. an officer quitter cannot expect much from the regular army he returns to.

btw, i am a special forces assn chapter president. i learned at our holiday gathering last night that a member of our chapter still in the reserves has been recalled to active duty with the 5th SFGA. i can only conclude that someone thinks it ain't over.
