have you considered just how difficult it is to penetrate the upper reaches of Al Quaeda as you suggest?

Yep... it would be extremely difficult. But nothing is impossible...

The Israelis have done it before in Syria (Eli Cohen), who reach the top of the Syrian Government .

geocities.com

October 5, 1963: Eli attends the Sixth National Convention Of The Baath. As a member of the Syrian National Revolutionary Command and volunteer worker for Radio Damascus, Eli had access to most sessions, while high level contacts allow him entry to closed sessions.

And even more fascinating is the fact that Eli Cohen was a Jew who was able to penetrate the Syrian Baath party.

Thus, there are all kinds of scenarios that could be discussed, where an Arab Al-Qaida member might have been turned as the result of being lured into committing an "unpardonable sin" (like cooperating with Jews.. etc) in the eyes of Al-Qaida.

But I would concur.. given the nature of the organization and its extremism, the odds of obtaining such an agent would be extremely slim.

But they have just as capable a SIGINT capability as the US does in the region.. and a wealth of Arab speaking Jews to provide quick translation, which has always been something the US lacks.

Who knows? I just offer it, like the suspicion about these Israelis detained by the FBI, as food for thought.

I'm waiting to see if these guys are ever permitted to open their mouths about the events that led to their detention.

The Israelis would have had to turn an Arab against his own kin, his sworn loyalties, and his own honor. Not easy.

that is being accomplished everyday right now in afghani.
there is little to no honor among most terrorists especially arab terrorists (with the exception of a very few fanatics).
the arabs have a long history of selling out to the highest bidder. until recently that was ossama bin missing. times are changing and so are loyalties.
