Militants offer to halt attacks in Israel

By SAUD ABU RAMADAN, United Press International
GAZA, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Militant Palestinian groups have offered to stop attacks in Israel for a week if the Israeli army stops its strikes in the West Bank and Gaza, according to a statement released Sunday.

The statement -- signed by several militant groups, including Islamic extremist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad -- offers to halt all attacks if the Israeli government stops "its assassinations, destruction, killings and bombardments."

"In return, we will stop our martyrdom attacks and armed attack within the borders of the occupied land of 1948 during this period, which will begin as of midnight Dec. 10 until the end of the month of Ramadan," the statement said.

Yasser Arafat's own Fatah party is also a signatory to the offer, which is issued in the name the Palestinian Resistance Brigades.

The statement, however, did not make any mention of attacks against the Israeli military or settlements in the Palestinian areas of the West Bank and Gaza.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have carried out five suicide bombings in the past 10 days, killing 29 Israelis.
