A follow up on the screen freezing and corrupt file problem:

I contacted Compaq tech support since I have the extended warranty... a fellow phoned me back and we spent about two or more hours going over everything... they fixed the problem... the corrupt files had to do with Internet Explorer, those files were uninstalled and reinstalled... all files are now fine... that is a great relief... also, I'm going to order three 128 megabyte modules which I can install, this should give me some more memory... it seems I need more memory... they explained that since I'm always online with ATT Broadband and spend a lot of the time on sites, my 64 MB is not enough and is used up during normal usage, this freezes the screen... with added memory and rebooting normally each morning to refresh the systems, all should work well... in the past couple of days, I've had no more screen freezing... so, I think the problem has actually been addressed... we'll see..... I'll keep you posted if something happens.....

Many thanks.....
