Peter, thanks for the Ace's Hardware Workstation Guide link…

I see the dual-1.7GHz Xeon server roughly achieves parity with the dual-1.2GHz AthlonMP.

The dual-1800+ is just simply in a league of its own.

And, yes, that's with SSE2 optimizations across the board.

My best WAG would be that these multithreaded apps just put too much pressure on the P4 front-end. If Jackson Technology / HyperThreading doubles much of the front end, as has been speculated, the results for the P4 could jump quite significantly, especially for SSE2-optimized apps.

Peter,
RE: Almost incredible how well the dual Athlon XP 1800+ compares to the dual Xeon 1700

Totally kicks it to death.
These type of reports will get more and more grphics work stations buying AMD. These guys do not like to sie and wai any more than they have to.
I wonder how it would work on one of those render farms they use at the gamme players places afetr they close for the night.

(In Toronto a lot of the computation for the animation industry is done at game salons after hours. They load the data on to the network and then caalculate until they open again.)

peter:

Pretty wild to think that AMD can already have developed such a competitive offering after entering this space only 6 months ago...Seems to be a fairly consistent outcome in any market in which AMD chooses to compete!

I just finished reading PC Mag's comparison of P4 and Athlon XP's, and their conclusion that AMD XP 1800+ performs at least as well as P4 2.0 gig with the kicker being that the Athlon XP 1800+ was half the price of the P4 2.0 gig...PC awarded the Athlon XP 1800+ as their processor of the year!!!
