<<I was the fool who stayed and lost lots of market money.>>
Welcome to the ship of fools. I was the fool who sold 200 shares of Dell in Dec '95 and Jan '96 for $$7,800
Watched it turn into $264,000 for the fool that bought it. If he kept it he is also a fool because its dropped to only $134,400 today.

At present CPQ and HWP are selling into the PC market BAU, so if the merger flops I don't think much changes in the short term. As for CPQ specifically, CEO Capellas has 'flip flopped' in his position on price competition in the recent past. I recall he initially said CPQ would not compete on price across the board, but ended up doing so. I'd say they will have to compete on price until/when they can implement their longer term strategy. CPQ's strategy is to minimize emphasis on the PC and bulk up their services biz as quickly as possible while trying to hold down the fort with the server biz. Problem is that it takes a long time to get into IBM's league with global services, so it will be a tough road. The key for them will be whether they can hold up the server business while the transition is in effect.

Regards,
John
