Actually, middle names can be useful. My wife and I decided to respect her parents by giving her maiden name as a middle name to our first son. Their only male child died in childbirth or shortly thereafter, I don't remember which and there's no one left to ask. So it was an easy decision for us to make and really cemented my relationship with her parents, too, when we told them of our plan. My father-in-law's eyes got teary upon being told of our simple gesture. From that moment on, he accepted me as a friend; a much, much better relationship than just being legally related.

Geez I've become maudlin as hell. I guess that happens when there is no future left and the past is the only refuge left in which one feels comfortable or meaningful. Oops, I did it again.
