So much for JC's claim on market share gain.
I hope this survey is as correct as JC's.

North American switching and routing market off

CHICAGO, Dec 10 (Reuters) - The North American switching and routing market declined in the third quarter and is expected to do the same this quarter before rebounding next year, according to studies released on Monday by market research firm RHK Inc.

The North American switching and routing market decreased 14 percent in the third quarter to $841 million in revenues from $981 million in the second quarter, according to two studies by South San Francisco, California-based RHK.

``Although we predict a similar decrease in (the fourth quarter), we expect to see a return to positive growth in 2002,'' RHK analyst Kelly Dougherty said in a statement.

Routers generated 53 percent of the North American switching and routing market in the third quarter, RHK said. A router is a machine that connects two computer networks for the transmission of data and information. A switch looks at incoming data to determine the destination address.

The core router market segment, which includes equipment that directs traffic at 2.5 gigabits or 10 gigabits per second, reached $254 million in the third quarter, down from $273 million in the second quarter, according to RHK. A gigabit is a billion bits of information.

Networking giant Cisco Systems Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news) share of that market was unchanged from the second quarter at 63 percent, while rival Juniper Networks Inc. (NasdaqNM:JNPR - news) saw its share rise to 34 percent from 29 percent the previous quarter.

Juniper's gain came at the expense of Avici Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:AVCI - news), which saw its share of the market slide to 3 percent in the third quarter from 8 percent in the second quarter, RHK said.

A second report on the edge device market found that the North American IP aggregation router market slid to $189 million in the third quarter from $207 million in the second quarter, according to RHK.

Cisco's lead in that segment shrunk to a still commanding 80 percent in the third quarter from 86 percent in the second quarter, while Juniper rose one percentage point to 11 percent and Ericsson (NasdaqNM:ERICY - news) remained unchanged at 1 percent, RHK said. Unisphere Networks Inc. picked up the most share, rising to 8 percent in the third quarter from 3 percent the previous quarter.

``Incumbent router vendors like Cisco have a significant beachhead that will be difficult for new entrants to penetrate,'' Dougherty said. ``Yet, those vendors who offer a range of value-added IP services at wire speed, with strong routing support, will have the greatest chance of success.''
