Some Canadian Budget Highlights

(Not large amounts on a world scale, but it is interesting to see how it is being allocated in these times)

Budget includes the following increases over prior budgets.

$7.7 billion over five years to enhance security, including: $2.2 billion for new air security agency; $1.6 billion for intelligence and policing; $1.2 billion to improve border security and efficiency; $1.2 billion for the Defence Department; $1 billion for screening entrants to Canada.

C$12 each way user fee for domestic flights, C$24 each way user fee for international flights.

Military increase to be spent on

- $300 million for capital spending over two years.

- $210 million over two years for Operation Apollo, the campaign against terrorism.

- $119 million over five years to double the capacity of Joint Task Force Two, elite anti-terrorist unit.

- $570 million shared with other agencies and departments over five years for emergency preparedness and expanded capacity to deal with nuclear, chemical and biological threats.

- No increase in authorized manpower of 60,000.
