I have two good monitors. One is an LCD I bought a few months ago that I really like. It was this one that I thought would be improved with the clear type, because the like most LCD displays, the edges of text are jagged, even though the display is excellent. The clear type did smooth out the edges, but at the expense of a very thick font.

Thick or thin, the clarity is excellent. I decided I liked thin, so I put up with the jagged edges.

I suspect you're right. It's a matter of monitor quality. And user preference.
