Intel makes more P4s than PIIIs, but the quantity of P6 processors that Intel makes still strongly outweighs the quantity of Netburst processors.

(Celerons ... they tip the quantity scale against the P4)

AMD makes Athlon XP at 129mm2, Athlon at 128mm2, Athlon4 at 129mm2, and Duron at 100mm2.

Ratio is probably around 2 to 1 for the 129 vs. the 100 (Duron + Mobile Duron) doesn't appear to sell as many units as Athlon + AthlonXP + Athlon MP + Athlon 4).

So AMD uses (ballpark) 120mm2 per die.

Intel sells Celeron .18 at 90mm2, PIII .18 at 90mm2, P4 at 217mm2, Celeron .13 at 79mm2, and mobile PIII at 79mm2.

If they have equal numbers of the 3 die sizes this quarter then average die size is 129mm2.

If Intel's wafer production of .13 is not ramping very quickly (more likely), then it's more like 2 at 90, 2 at 217 and 1 at 79 which would be an average die size of 139mm2 - still not a major difference from AMD's 120mm2.

I would guess that both companies get roughly the same mm2 of good silicon per wafer, and that these two companies are ahead of anyone else in the industry, in terms of yields.
