U.S. IP VPN Services Market Will Soar to Nearly $14.7 Billion in 2006, IDC Says

18 Dec 2001

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., December 18, 2001 – The IP virtual private network (VPN) services market for the United States has grown considerably from 2000 on both the demand and supply sides and will continue to grow in 2001 and beyond. According to a recent study by IDC, the total IP VPN services market for the United States will grow from over $5.4 billion in 2001 to nearly $14.7 billion in 2006. This represents a CAGR of 22% during the forecast period.

Delving deeper into market components by type of provider, IDC research finds the carrier market will grow to over $5.3 billion in 2006, but the do-it-yourself (DIY) market remains the largest provider of IP VPN services. This segment is expected to grow to nearly $9.4 billion in 2006.

Several factors in both 2000 and 2001 attributed to a forecast shift for 2001. In particular, the general economic slowdown dampened IP VPN deployment in 2001, causing enterprises to slow their implementation plans for IP VPN services. This trend will continue into 2002 with resumed dramatic growth thereafter.

Demand for IP VPN services is strong and growing. Some of the specific trends in 2001 driving the IP VPN Market include:

More companies are implementing and expanding IP VPN services
Carrier IP VPN services continue to expand and mature
Vendors have made improvements in IP VPN products and services
Demand side data from IDC’s 2001 WAN Manager Survey show significant changes over last year’s results. IP VPNs are maturing and have taken their place as a mainstream wide area network (WAN) option for business. “Survey results show that IP VPNs are a much more common form of wide area network for many companies than in the past,” said Steven Harris, research manager, IP VPN services. “The general trend seen this year is more intensive and extensive use of IP VPNs for U.S. companies. More companies are using IP VPNs and in more sites and for more remote users than in 2000.”

IDC’s new study IP VPN Services: U.S. Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2006 (IDC #25861) looks at the IP VPN services market for the United States and outlines the specific trends that are impacting it. Topics covered include a forecast for the IP VPN services market, carrier market shares, carrier service profiles, types of IP VPN providers, and types of IP VPN implementations. Remote access, site-to-site, and extranet IP VPNs are discussed. Additionally, IDC has also released IP VPN Services: A Demand-Side View, 2001 (IDC #25586). This report includes results from IDC’s 2001 WAN Manager Survey and examines the IP VPN service space from a demand-side perspective, focusing on the interest in, and implementation strategies of, medium-sized and large U.S. businesses.
