If falling behind of one company is a gift to it's competitor, you are right. Intel fell behind with Piii, and had to resort to first version (without shrinks) of P4 for mainstream. If AMD did not have competitive Athlon, Intel would not have had to rush the switch to P4. P4 would have been priced high enough, so that the demand would be only how much Intel is able to supply, while continuing to rely on perfected Piii for the bulk of shipments.
