From what I can ascertain about the Awad matter, he was not deported because he advocated non-violence (why would he be?), but because he was not legally in the country. There have been others deported from Israel (and from the US, for that matter) based on immigration status, rather than political beliefs.

Awad is not the single Palestinian who advocates non-violence. There are a pitiful handful of others, none of whom has been deported by Israelis. Prominent ones like Eyad Serraj, however, are continously harassed by Arafat's men. Indeed, Arafat ordered Serraj jailed for opposing violent activities.

By contrast to what Israel does (people like Israel Shahak and Serraj were never arrested by Israelis), Arafat has intentionally arrested and terrorized "peaceniks" simply because of their peaceful political views, according to Amnesty International.

That's a big difference.

``He has to continue fighting against terror and that's his obligation at this point of time,'' Solana told reporters after meeting Sharon and Zinni.

Later he told Arafat during a joint news conference with the Palestinian leader: ``You have in front of you very many challenges. You will have the support of the European Union but you have to comply with those challenges.''

Solana's call followed unusually harsh criticism of Arafat by EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday who said he had not done enough to rein in militants.

Tom, so you think it is a good start? End of Hamas? No?

Under Zinni's proposal, the Palestinians will use the period to arrest those responsible for terrorist attacks while Israel will refrain from military operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and halt assassinations of militants.
