Maybe. But the P4 might also have an advantage due to the it's high bandwidth to memory. Vision applications need to move a lot of data around, and that plays to the P4s strengths. As you note, the Athlon (especially an XP) would likely do well because of the non-determinstic nature of typical AI code.

This is a baseless generalization, vis-a-vis a computer vision application.

AI programs run the gamut from data-mining of huge data sets (finding minerals, extracting financial trends, etc.) to robotic applications with a strong emphasis on distributed processing to neural nets with extremely localized computation to computer vision (based on image processing, hence matrix computations).

Extrapolating to relative performance of Athlon over P4 is delusional.

Get a grip.
