sandintoes ...

on the steps, there are several methods of doing the edge of the risers ....

depending upon the thickness of the wood product, a bull nose of hardwood is the best, but make SURE there is sufficient support underneath ...
one way I like is the use of a metal bar on the edge of the step .....
you can find several different ones in the trim dept at your local lumber yard or floorcovering store ....
brushed aluminum, bright, golden anodized, etc .....
depending upon the decor of the room/house....

The staircase I redid in our house a couple of years ago ....
actually moved the whole thing from the dining room into the living room as the steepness was starting to bother both me and my wife *(advancing years ....gggg) .... and there was no room down OR up to extend the length of the stairs ... which, of course, was necessary to lessen the slope ....

anyway, I cut a new opening into the balcony looking out onto the living room,
built a two level staircase and used natural stain on Bruce laminated ply boards (the color like most basketball courts) and use gold anodized strips on the edge and little bitty quarter round on the sides (it is called screen moulding btw)....
looks really good .. or at least it does to us ....ggggg

<<I also have to have the house woodwork painted, but I want the floor in first. >>

That's backwards. Paint first and then new flooring.
