Kandahar governor wants armed men off the streets

The new governor of Kandahar says his top priority is to get armed men off the streets.

He says this will take place before the countryside is scoured for Taliban and al-Qaida renegades.

Gul Agha suspects leading Taliban fugitive Mullah Omar may be somewhere near the boundary of the city.

Other reports have put the former supreme leader in the mountain homeland of his Hotak tribe east of Kandahar.

US marines have joined the search for Taliban and al-Qaida fighters, moving forces into new positions near the city.

Many of the armed men in the streets of Kandahar are part of militias under Agha and other anti-Taliban figures.

Nevertheless, Agha said they would have to be removed because their presence raises anxiety among the population.

"We are not satisfied with the present situation because of armed groups in the area," he said. "People do not like the sight of them."

He says he wants gunmen off the streets within the next 48 hours.
